The animated Disney film COCO (2017) does an excellent job of illuminating the beautiful celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Belief that the spirits of our deceased loved ones return to the world of the living through celebration of color, food, ofrendas (alters) and music draws families together to "say their names and tell their stories". Through joy, instead of mourning, we remember our loved ones. The opening monologue makes me laugh for personal reasons. The lead Character, Miguel describes his great great grandmother Mama Imelda. He says,
"She found a way to provide for her daughter. She rolled up her sleeves and she learned to make shoes.
She could have made candy!
Or fireworks!
Or sparkly underwear for wrestlers!
But no...she chose shoes. Then she taught her daughter to make shoes. Later she taught her son-in-law. Then her grandkids got roped in. As her family grew, so did the business."
Allow me to officially introduce myself. I am Lori. I am the sister of CREO Director, Grant Legan. I am also a proud member of team CREO. In fact, our small team is made up of several dedicated family members.
We have watched Grant throughout his creative life and like Miguel's family we have cheered, questioned, suggested weird and wonderful ways to move forward and rolled up our sleeves to participate!
With Dia de los Muertos 2025 approaching, I am certain the relatives who have come before us are proud of CREO's growth and even more thrilled that it is a family venture based on their examples of hard work and family bonds. Your continued support as the CREO community reinforces those family values.
Team CREO thanks you and wishes you and your families peace and joy at this time of remembrance. Maybe, just maybe with your help we will drop a sparkly underwear line for Dia de los Muertos 2026!!!
