How Chicago Invented the Modern Men’s Brief (During One of Its Coldest Winters)

How Chicago Invented the Modern Men’s Brief (During One of Its Coldest Winters)

POV: no ones high school history class
"Good day class!"
"Good day Miss Lori!"
"Alright, alright now, settle in for a weird and wonderful Chicago history lesson":

The "LONG COLD SIEGE" was one of the most brutal winters of the Midwest during 1935.  The city of Chicago listed the year as the 9th coldest on record.  However, Marshall Field's shoppers were not deterred on January 19 by the severe weather; drawn by a window display of newly released men's briefs, customers bought out the entire stock before noon.  In the following weeks,12,000 would sell and numbers would climb to 30,000 within 3 months.
Inspired by a French Riviera swimsuit postcard he received, Arthur Kneibler of Cooper's, Inc., invented the first men's brief providing supported, snug fit and comfort. The garment would usher in a nationwide change in men's underwear.
In 1938, Cooper's, Inc. hosted one of the first Underwear Fashion Shows at a Chicago retail convention featuring the updated brief and other garments in a staged "Cellophane Wedding" of which photographs would later be run in LIFE Magazine.
in 1971, Cooper's Inc. would change their name to JOCKEY Menswear Inc.
